Said Business School: Students think more about the quality of the MBA

A. What do you consider the most significant developments in MBA/management education and the international business school market as a whole this year?

  • As you know, many Schools reported a downturn in applications for this year. Our numbers of full-time MBAs are significantly up this year at 225 - an increase of 55 on last year's class. We are wondering if uncertainty in the market has encouraged students to think more about the quality of the MBA.

  • We are seeing some local markets develop their own offerings and this is reducing the number of students we are attracting from them - I am thinking of China particularly.

  • On the other hand, applications are up from India, reflecting a buoyant economy perhaps.

  • There is a significant increase in interest in entrepreneurship among our applications. We think this is both because this is increasingly of interest but also because we are attracting a higher proportion of this sort of student reflecting the fact that we are increasingly known for our expertise and offering in this area. As you know, our students are a very entrepreneurial group and 1 in 10 of our alumni have now started their own ventures.
