Methodology

Our evaluation of the research output of economics researchers is based on publications in 182 internationally recognized scholarly publications. German speaking researchers working in foreign countries are not covered at the moment. On the other hand, foreign researchers working in Germany, Austria or the German speaking part of Switzerland are included in the survey.

We evaluated the lists of publications of roughly 1000 reserachers. The evaluation covers publications in 182 journals weighted according to reputation and impact. The weight of the five international top journals (AER, QJE, RES, JPE, Econometrica) is set to one.

The list of journals and the weights are derived from a combination of two journals rankings, the Tinbergen-List and the ranking of Combes/Linnemer („Where are the Economists who Publish?”, JEEA Dezember 2003).

We included all journals which either received at least 0,33 points in the Combes/Linnemer-Ranking or are included in the Tinbergen-List. The complete list of journals and their weights can be found here

Accepted papers are included. Comments receive half the points of regular articles. Replies, corrections and book reviews are not included. The journals and weights according to the Handelblatt-List and the two source-lists are here.

Multiple authors (n) are allocated 2p/(n+1) points for a co-written paper, where p is the number of points of the article. In the 2006-edition all papers which were accepted for publication until September 18th , 2006 are included in the ranking.
