Exclusive Angelique Kerber Upsets Top-Seeded Serena Williams in Australian Open Thriller

Germany’s Angelique Kerber ended top-seeded Serena Williams’ plans to win her seventh women’s Australian Open title and tie the 22 major titles of another German player, Steffi Graf. The 28-year-old Ms. Kerber, seeded seventh in her 14th year as a pro, played the match of her life on the biggest stage of her life, beating the 34-year-old Ms. Williams in a thrilling 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 final on Saturday in Melbourne. Ms. Kerber beat some powerful players en route to her first-ever Grand Slam final appearance, but none at the same level of Ms. Williams, the world’s number one female player, who before today won 21 out of 25 in Grand Slam finals and 8-0 in major finals over the last four seasons. The win could mark a turning point for Ms. Kerber, who last year lost in the first round of the Melbourne tournament but went on to win four titles. And the defeat could have Ms. Williams wondering how to change her game strategy to make her Grand Slam dream come true. Last year, Roberta Vinci ended the American’s hopes of matching Ms. Graf’s Grand Slam record at the U.S. Open and today it was Ms. Kerber who put history on hold in Australia.   Picture source: DPA   Photo source: DPA
