Exclusive Exclusive: Netflix Threatens Internet Providers with Ranking System, Liberty Global CEO says

Netflix has threatened to rank Internet providers based on how well they can stream media content, Liberty Global chief executive Mike Fries told Handelsblatt in an exclusive interview. “Netflix wants to force providers to make a deal to stream their products or face punishment if they don’t do it,” Mr. Fries said. Mr. Fries insisted that slower streaming was not the fault of Liberty Global but of the streaming websites that often don’t send the data content correctly. The chief executive of Liberty Global, an Internet and cable provider active in 14 countries, supports a zero rating deal with content providers. Such a deal would exempt certain types of data from counting toward a users cap. Critics argue it would violate net neutrality by providing some content providers with an advantage.
