Exclusive Exclusive: RTL Considers European Rival to Netflix

German television company RTL Group is considering launching a European rival to U.S. streaming service Netflix in the coming years, the company’s chief executive told Handelsblatt in an interview. Guillaume de Posch said RTL may launch an online streaming service in the next “two, three years.” Whether RTL goes ahead with the plans depends largely on weighing the benefits and risks of such a move, he said. A key question is whether RTL would be able to get programming rights for the whole of Europe, which would allow it to save costs and achieve economies of scale, Mr. de Posch said. This hasn’t been possible so far – U.S. production companies have insisted on selling programming rights to each European country individually. A subsidiary of media group Bertelsmann, RTL has done little to challenge major streaming services like Netflix or Amazon to date. RTL has so far launched a full online platform only in the Netherlands. In Germany, its only online platform to date is a streaming service for children.
